In the archaeological area , just south of the monastery of St. Anthony , is the symbol of the city , the Spring of Pliny . Certainly dates back to messapic ages and is located within the areas where it develops the ancient village a short distance from surrounding walls . It takes its name from Pliny the Elder and constitutes the coat of arms of Manduria. It is a great natural cave of 18 meters (59 feet) in diameter and 8 meters (26 feet) high , accessible by a large double staircase with 20 steps , carved into the rock in ancient times. In the top of the vault there is a large square skylight , partially consisting of large blocks in place during the messapic period. It features an almond tree root that tradition existing since ancient times. Inside the cave there is also a basin surrounded by a circular wall where still flowing water source , the same underground source told with awe and wonder the same Pliny. Spring of Pliny was , in the past ( such as caves in various ancient centers of Salento) , almost certainly for the worship of an unknown name in the pantheon messapico , in all probability a water deity . Moreover also retains the title of " Scegnu ", which some consider keeping a " genius " , name and protect beneficial .
